In Half the Church, she continues in that vein but also shifts her focus so that her mission has now become twofold.

First, she aims to widen the reader's scope of understanding from a primarily middle class Western worldview to a much broader international view. To do so she takes the reader through snapshots of the lives of individual girls and women identifying each by name and describing her circumstances in light of the societal context in which she lives. Although she spares the reader of some details too horrific to repeat, there remains enough information to cause the reader to be sickened by the knowledge that events so tragic happen in epidemic proportions in the 21st century.

Second, James draws from the Biblical foundations spelled out in her previous body of work to bring to the attention of the reader, whether male or female, God's explicit call on women to join alongside her brothers as ezer-warriors. To illustrate how both men and women benefit when the sexes join together to battle the enemy, James retells events that happened in the lives of great ezer-warriors both in scripture and in more recent history. Once the reader has gained that understanding and has heard the cries of the helpless, the author shifts her focus to call "half the church" to arise and go forth into their destinies.

The book is well structured. James's research and writing point readers to the bigger picture of the church's mission. She intentionally does not take sides on troublesome issues debated by Biblical scholars. Rather, she urges readers to dig deeper into God for answers on those passages of scripture. The topic is certainly thought-provoking and worthy of self-reflection. Through her writing, James seeks to awaken the sleeping giantess one reader at a time.

NOTE: I requested and received a copy of this title via NetGalley.com but made no commitment to review it.

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ~World Health Organization, 1948"

Counterfeit Gospels by Trevin Wax

I received a copy of this title via @NetGalley. I’ve volunteered for ten days of military training in Israel with my friends. The Sababa brochure said it would be a “fun” summer experience. Okay, so I didn’t sign up to prove I’m not a princess…I did it to surprise my hot Israeli boyfriend stationed at the same base.

Too bad nobody told me:

- It’s hot in the Negev desert…like, so hot your makeup melts off and you get under-boob sweat spots.

- You can’t sleep in until 11 a.m.

- You shouldn’t kill bees with your flatiron—don’t ask.

- Peeing in a hole isn’t easy (when you’re a girl)—double don’t ask.

When I find out our team leader is my boyfriend Avi, I’m totally psyched…until I learn he has to treat me like all the other recruits. Can you say OY VEY!

About the Author:

Simone Elkeles (Illinois) was born and raised in the Chicago area. Half Israeli, she has close ties to the culture described in her book. How to Ruin a Summer Vacation, winner of the 2005 Chick Lit Stiletto contest, is her first novel.

Teaser Tuesday - Oct. 20

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Drugs, crime and poverty are sterile words that don’t do justice to the scene in the streets. In this neighborhood turning the other cheek only opens up fresh skin for another strike. How do you survive in a place like this? You hang tight with a few close friends. They move, you move. It’s just that simple.

Sean, Justin, Kyle and Vanessa have always been able to count on each other. They’ve had each others’ backs since fourth grade. At school, Sean is king of the hill and he leads with only one rule. When someone hassles him or one of his friends he always fights back. By instinct he pegs the one thing that embarrasses the attacker more than anything else. With a few choice words he puts him back in his place – no blood, no bruises – but very effective.

Then – bam! The next thing you know Sean’s different. He’s going downhill fast and Justin, Kyle and Vanessa don’t know what’s gotten into him. Now he’s the one starting fights, he’s hanging with a tougher crowd and his grades are slipping. Worst of all, he won’t be straight with them about why he’s ditching them on Saturdays when they’ve always spent the weekends together. They decide that they’ve got to find a way to help him before he hits bottom. But what if Sean’s outgrown them and doesn’t want their help? When the truth finally comes out Sean and his friends have to decide if things can go back to the way they were or if it’s time for them to go their separate ways.

Torrey Maldonado has captured the essence of the universal struggle for balancing truth and privacy within the bounds of friendship. He’s also taken us inside the hearts and minds of youth who live with a very difficult and disturbing slice of reality.

~~~~~~~~~~
Secret Saturdays by Torrey Maldonado
Coming in April 2010
From G. Details are available in ALA's "Books Banned and Challenged 2007-2008," and "Books Banned and Challenged 2008-2009," and the "Kids' Right to Read Project Report."
Blogfest 2009
Simon & Schuster BLOGFEST 2009
What is Blogfest?:
Blogfest is a two-week event where 40 of Simon & Schuster's top teen authors and their fan bases come together to share ideas on one single blog.
(taken directly from blogfest)
Review: The Declaration by Gemma Malley
You’ve probably heard the sayings “all good things must come to an end” and “life is good,” right? Well, obviously life must come to an end. You don’t need sayings to know that. But in this futuristic tale by Gemma Malley, the good life never has to end. Every legal 16-year-old gets to choose. So, what’s the choice? Eternal life or a child. Just sign the Declaration and you’re in – forever.
The problem for 15-year-old Anna is that she’s not legal. She doesn’t get that choice or any other choices because she’s Surplus. All the children who weren’t supposed to be born are Surplus. For Anna that means Grange Hall, a training facility, where she’s being programmed to serve the ‘immortals’ until her short miserable life is over. She’s been beaten, starved and brainwashed to believe that her parents were selfish to have her and that it would take her whole life to atone for their sins.
Then 16-year-old Peter gets dropped off at Grange Hall by the Catchers. But Peter’s no ordinary Surplus. He’s got confidence and spirit and all his attention is focused on Anna. He tells her he knows her parents and that they love her. He says he got caught on purpose so he can help her escape. He’s definitely getting into Anna’s head. Anna’s life depends on her ability to continue her training without distraction but it’s getting harder and harder for her to maintain her focus. What if Peter’s telling the truth? How long can she suppress her hidden hopes and dreams for a real life outside of Grange Hall? Is this a trick? Is it a test to see if she’s ready to advance in her training? Or could everything she believes in be one huge pack of lies?
The Declaration is a thought-provoking read and the way things are going now it may not be too far off from tomorrow’s truth.
Teen Boys and Young Adult Lit: An Important Relationship | Getting Boys To Read
Teen Boys and Young Adult Lit: An Important Relationship | Getting Boys To Read
Shared via AddThis
Jumpstart's Read for the Record
Sometimes the smallest of actions makes the biggest difference - Hell literally knocks on Devon March's door – his closet door to be exact. All the hordes of hell seek to drag him into their fiery depths. He knows he has the power to defeat a demon or two and to cast them back into their hellholes but he doesn't understand why. The key to Devon's future lies in his past but the time to learn of his heritage is quickly running out. The Madman, an evil sorcerer bent on ruling the world, knows Devon's powers better than he does. Will he uncover the truth of his heritage in time to save the world from the Madman? Does he even possess the power needed to defeat him? He'll have to go into the very depths of hell to find out. Of course, getting into hell won't be a problem for Devon. The question is … will he be strong enough to fight his way back out?
LibraryThing | Catalog your books online (7 September 2009)
http://snipurl.com/rnjwj
PaperBackSwap.com: Free Online Book Club to Swap, Trade & Exchange Books.
PaperBackSwap.com: Free Online Book Club to Swap, Trade & Exchange Books.
Shared via AddThis
I absolutely love this site!
I use it all the time =)
Heads Up, High School Writers and Editors… « Flip the Switch : Teens aWake
Heads Up, High School Writers and Editors… « Flip the Switch : Teens aWake
This could be a great opportunity for budding teen journalists. I enjoyed exploring the different websites available to enrich both my work and my personal life including Google Reader, Playlist, YouTube, NPR Podcast Directory, and MySpace. I enjoyed learning about tagging, widgets and webcasting. I especially enjoyed using Blogger as a place to gather my thoughts and findings. Blogger helped me record and make sense of all of the different directions my explorations took me.
I think the aspect that made this project a success was that we were given TIME to discover and explore. Without the gift of time, this project would probably have been an exercise in frustration and futility. We are all so busy. It's hard to take the time to learn something new. The design of this project gave me the time I needed both to join and enjoy this adventure.
YouTube
YouTube is a whole world of entertainment, education and just plain fun. The file size and number of parts in the book are both listed so you can make a determination using that information. There were 620 available podcasts at the time of my site visit. I had a hard time deciding which podcast to add to my blog. My top four favorites (today) are "On the Money with Chris DiSimio", "GLT's Poetry Radio", "Your Legal Rights" and "NPR: Education" podcasts. Finally, I chose GLT's Poetry Radio because each podcast is 2-5 minutes in length and a poem put to music is refreshing to hear. You'll find it in my sidebar.
Podcasts put the information you want - where you want it - so you can listen at your leisure. Sound's kind of like TiVo for your ears.
2008 Web 2.0 Awards
Category: Widgets
Tool: YourMinis
For this discovery exercise, I explored one of the Web 2.0 tools on the "2008 Web 2.0 Awards" page. The documents created on Google Documents are MS Word compatible and thus a good alternative for those without computers at home and/or without the availability of MS Word elsewhere. Another benefit of an online writer is that your documents can be saved and retrieved at a later time on any computer with an internet connection. The <a href="http://www.ipl.org"_blank>Internet Public Library is one site that contains extensive pathfinders for many areas of research although not in a wiki format. I have followed the online procedure at IPL to notify them of a broken link. With a wiki, I could have taken care of the broken link on my own. The wiki format would allow for quicker editing of erroneous information (including broken links).
I did join the Library Success wiki and then used the information I learned in the Wiki in Plain English video to add my name to the User Profile list on the wiki. See, <a href="http://libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Wiki_User_List"_blank>Library Success Wiki User List
Also, I did notice an announcement on the Library Success wiki that expresses one of the concerns about using wikis: "Update! Because of vandalism problems, e-mail confirmation is now required".
I'd like to see our library system implement the use of wikis for pathfinders and for sharing programming success tips.
Wordle on Del.icio.us
http://wordle.net/
"Wordle is a toy for generating "word clouds" from text that you provide. In that article she referred to "a rising ladder of value progressing from commodity to product to service to experience: e.g., from selling coffee beans to selling Maxwell House to serving coffee at Dunkin Donuts to providing an exotic Starbucks’ coffee permutation in its chattering, WiFi, jazz café atmosphere."
I think Web 2.0 as it applies to libraries is about experiencing, sharing, collaborating, learning, growing and ultimately enriching the lives of all who participate in the process of growth and change. I have learned with my children that if I want to find them and connect with them, I have to seek them out and go where they go (i.e. MySpace, etc.) They are excited to share their experiences and to lead me into their technologically advanced world. I just have to be willing to take the time and energy to follow. In my opinion, some of the "related tags" that are listed to categorize this reference were useful to me while others were not. I'm not sure, however, if the related tags all have "web2.0" as an accompanying tag or not. If so, I can see how they'd be more useful. I can see great potential in this tool for research assistance both on the job and in my FSU courses.
Also, I have been frustrated with my browser's bookmark feature and think Del.icio.us could be more useful. I don't know how I'd feed my info junkie head without a reader. I love being able to get news about all my current interests in one place. How else can a girl keep up?
My dilemma is that I seem to be constantly wavering between too many and not enough feeds. I find the search for new feeds to be somewhat like bellying up to a buffet table. I find something I want to sample and then later decide I've had enough of that feed. No problem, just delete it. Oh, and when I can't keep up - I just delete the neglected posts and start fresh. Sometimes purging can be healthy too. :) Maybe someday I'll find that happy medium.
As far as how libraries can take advantage of RSS feeds, well, it all depends on finding info that patrons and others WANT to 'eat'. Unless you're on a diet and are intentionally limiting your food intake choices or you're forcing yourself to eat foods you'd rather avoid, you're going to eat things you LIKE eating, right? Or, like I said, I'm willing to sample a feed that sounds interesting but if I lose interest in it I've got no qualms about hitting that 'delete' key either.
Who's your target audience? What kind of info do they seek? Just promise me you won't take a survey to find out!
Coming Up For Air Guitar - ALA Tech Source Blog entry
http://www.techsource.ala.org/blog/2008/06/coming-up-for-air-guitar.html I know there are also other ALA groups in SL but YALSA is my favorite!
I took this photo of my avatar in SL. Yes, I love this outfit ... and my evening gowns ... my goth outfits ... my, well, you'll just have to go to SL to get your own avatar! You can have the wardrobe of your dreams including shoes, purses, makeup, and jewelry too! (sorry guys for that little girlie moment).
I discovered SL through one of my MLIS classes at FSU. Our assignment was to go to SL, create an avatar, find a reference librarian on SL, interview that librarian about library and reference services on SL, take a photo of our avatars together and then report back to the class on our experiences. It seemed overwhelming at first, but now it's just fun!
A new idea ...
You can publish a post to your own blog without going to Blogger! Select 'Email". Enter a word or phrase (i.e. '23things' or something else). Then select 'publish emails immediately'. You're done! I like to work with the teens so I’ll probably focus more of my efforts on uncovering ways to apply blogging technology for usage by and for teenagers.
One of the more common uses of blogging would be for a teen librarian or someone working in that capacity to maintain a blog detailing upcoming teen events, soliciting advice (i.e. teen advisory) for teen programming, and providing a forum for community dialoging on new teen books available at the library. A blog would also be a great place to share websites of interest as they can be listed as hyperlinks which would take the interested blogger directly to any website with only a click (or two) of a mouse.
I hope to surf current library blogs during this exploration project to see what other ways blogs can positively impact library services.
7.5 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners
The 7.5 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners provide a solid foundation for anyone of any age who is seeking to step out into something new. I thought the presentation was user-friendly and I would eagerly recommend it to friends and family members outside of our Web 2.0 Exploration Project. I am very excited to be able to apply these Habits to our current project. I look forward to delving into some cutting-edge technology that may prove useful in meeting the needs of our patrons.
I am also beginning a new adventure outside of work so it was very fortunate for me to have this step-by-step guidance so readily available.
